Last June, I was running out of our apartment at 6:42 every night to play in front of a hospital 10 blocks away. I didn’t know it then, but it was an experience that opened my musical path and showed me why I’ve been doing what I do, but didn’t quite understand. A year later, I get to represent the Music for Healing and Transition Program on their Thursdays with Therapeutic Music series via Facebook Live! I don’t run @patriotbrass in any way, but I stand back, listen, and learn a lot. It has been the only ensemble to call me regularly in NYC since 2014, so I’m a loyal follower. Memorial Day is the biggest day in the season for Patriot Brass, and it was jilting to miss it last year. It’s common to associate Memorial Day with sales and cookouts, but I’ve learned through this group that it’s a deep and somber day. I often nod and say “Memorial Day”, because after working with PBE, “Happy Memorial Day” just feels wrong now. Gold Star families are families who lost a loved one in combat. Memorial Day is for those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, and for those who are haunted every day by loss.
